. A number of the drawings in my series "The Daily Life of the Virgin of Guadalupe" have been inspired by photographs I've taken of family back home in Mexico over the years.
|
Here, what caught my eye was a photo I took years ago, when our niece Xitlaly was a baby, held in the arms of my father-in-law Don Carlos. I was enchanted by the light, by the tenderness of her grandfather's touch, and by the serious expression in her face.
|
It occurred to me as I drew this piece that, although there are plentiful traditional depictions of the Virgin Mary with her mother, Saint Anne, I can't think of a single one of her with her father, Saint Joachim....
|
Here, then, is the infant Guadalupe, held in the arms of her father San Joaquin.
