Serenata de Sirena
The Siren's Serenade
Drawings by Los Angeles-based artist J. Michael Walker
A few years ago I created a series of paintings inspired both by Japanese ukiyo-e prints and by my love of women. "Las Geisha Mermaids" married these two concepts to give expression to some of the things that the women in my life were experiencing.
After completing that series I felt I wanted to continue to explore the mermaid theme. I was disappointed that most portrayals of mermaids depict a male-focused Barbie-like fantasy figure with fins. By contrast, I wanted to create a real "earth mother" connected to the natural world; a free spirit that would appeal to women.
