This drawing - my first still-life - was commissioned for the cover of Encarnación's Kitchen: Mexican Recipes from Nineteenth-Century California, a collection of recipes of Encarnación Pinedo, translated and edited by my good friend Dan Strehl. Encarnación Pinedo appears to be the first Latina to have published a book in California, as well as one of the first women authors of the state. This book, then, is an important example not only of the varied and accomplished cuisine of Mexican California, but also a historically significant stance of cultural defiance against the dominant culture then sweeping the land.

My inspiration was the magnificent work of 19th century painter Agustin Arrieta, Mexico's consummate painter of still-lifes. Arrieta would often place birds, or even cats, into his compositions; so I happily worked Dan's parrot Abique, into the piece.
It was also a joy to go shopping for fruits, vegetables, and tamales to arrange; the pottery is from our kitchen.
