This was a commissioned portrait:
a friend wanted a portriat of his wife
as a special birthday gift.
Romaine, in "a former life", was a librarian in the rare books collection of the Los Angeles Public Library; thus the references to illuminated manuscripts.
The couple now lives adjacent to the Saguaro National Park in Tucson; thus the landscape in the arched window.
I love getting to create portraits and insert telling details....
