Once, a number of years ago, I began sketching interpretations of the intricately embroidered capes, or mantles, of the Virgin, as she was painted or sculpted by Latin American Viceregal artists.
As I did so, the mantles grew ever larger, pretty much engulfing the wee woman inside, and feeling somewhat like a helmut and armor.
So the idea occurred to give her the face of a young girl - in this instance a child I met and photographed some dozen years ago, in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca.
I kept the surface treatment soft and rather more lightly sketched than is usual for me, to give the feeling of a chromolithograph.
I especially love the idea of her needing to stand on a little footstool to prevent the cape to drag on the ground....
