The Virreinal
Drawings by Los Angeles-based artist J. Michael Walker
"Many people seem to think Mexican art stopped when Cortes marched into Tenochtitlan and didn't start up again until Diego Rivera returned from Paris. But I've long felt that the art produced during the Viceregal, or Virreinal, period (roughly 16th-18th century Mexico) is full of thematic invention and profound emotion. And, like the work of the Flemish Primitives, it exerts a strong influence on my art"
